Dental Infection Control & Safety is a relatively new subject in dentistry that crosses all fields/ specialties of dentistry. It is an integral part of the undergraduate dental curriculum in most medically advanced countries, and periodic continuing dental education is mandated for dental practitioners.

While the control of blood-borne diseases in the past has focused mainly on HIV and AIDS, in reality it is a field that encompasses control of all transmissible diseases during provision of dental care (to both the care provider as well as the patient). Today, infection control includes the study and control of all blood-borne diseases, respiratory diseases, immunization, use of personal protective equipment, use of surface barriers, germicide use, instrument reprocessing, control of environmental biofilms in treatment water, occupational safety, and health policy that impacts "Safe Dental Care".
